To the editor, INTRODUCTION ------------ Yes, I froze my grandfather, he is still on dry ice in Nederland Colorado, and I am still fighting the authorities to keep him frozen. The press coverage has been extensive, and by now the readers and the audience probably think they know all the details, when in fact all they have read, heard or seen is a distorted sensationalized picture consisting of sound bytes, often quoted out of context and with no or very little verification. It is quite frustrating to hear my story repeatedly distorted, to have whole newspaper articles creating a picture of what I have been doing that is not true and then attacking me for what I haven'e done nor claimed to do, It is also frustrating to sit through 2 hour long interviews trying to explain what I am doing, only to have a 15 second sound byte presented on the nightly or next day news, out of context and with no way of correcting it. So please permit me to set the record straight. THE TABLOID STORY ----------------- The story in the press has been: That 2 frozen bodies were suddenly discovered on my property in Nederland, Colorado. That these two bodies were my grand father and my very best friend. That my cryonic venture was in violation of existing zoning laws, that I had build a blast shelter, that the building inspector kicked my mother out of the latter because it was unsafe, and that I as a result of the above conflict got deported. My small facility has been presented as a small unprofessional operation run out of a small metal shed and using dryice, which is not cold enough. The press has claimed that several hundred Americans have been frozen professionally, are stored in liquid Nitrogen and have paid more than $ 100,000 each for the privilege. A picture has been created as though the cryonic view is that the bodies were not dead, that they could at some point be warmed up, go through a few transplants or minor surgery and be alive again. And having created this strawman, the press has rushed in to show that since there is extensive frost damage, since even bodies frozen alive can't simply be brought back to life by being warmed up, therefore cryonics won't work and what I am trying to accomplish, can't be done and is a lot of crap. People have created their own erroneous pictures of cryonics, then attacked and made fun of these. The ethics of cryonics have been questioned, and several people have called for banning it all together. CORRECTION ---------- So for the record: The bodies were not suddenly discovered, the cryonic trade journals had already been writing about my cryonic facility for years, and I sent out more than 100 press releases to the local press about my two cryonic clients, 2 months BEFORE the press and the town "discovered" these. The property is not mine but my mother's. Al Campbell, the second person I had in cryonic storage, was not my best friend, as the press claimed, as a matter of fact I never heard about the fellow until he had already been dead for 1 month, and he was already frozen when I took over storing him on a six month contract, that had a clause of full openness to the press. When the town trustees threatened to confiscate the bodies and thaw these out, this scared off my client's friend, who cancelled the contract and brought my client back to Chicago. I have since been told second hand that my client was then thawed out and reinterred but I have not been able to verify that. The ordinance against cryonics was passed after I got deported and after my client was moved out, and I don't see how I could have violated it before it was even past, or why it should take effect post defacto. My mother was kicked out of our house because the town hall wanted to put pressure on her, and calling the house unsafe was a politically motivated excuse fabricated to harass us. The house I built is not a blast shelter, but a fire proof, storm proof and earthquake proof residence. The interior has not yet beem completed, but when the building inspector called the house unsafe, then the local joke was on him: As long as the house is maintained you would be hard pressed to find a safer house in the same town. And both the cryonic conflict and the building code conflict arose after I was deported and not vice versa. Aside from not getting all the facts straight, the press has otherwise been very helpful and assisted me in fending off the attack by the government officials. The press coverage and a few friends are the main reason I have been able to keep my grand father frozen. I was building a state of the art concrete cryonic facility, The concrete vault, with an electric freezer and a liquid Nitrogen dewar would have been completed in the summer of 1994 if it hadn't been for the illegal interference by immigration officials and the town trustees. The metal shed and the dry ice box are an emergency solution until I can overcome the government opposition to my project. Dry ice is routinely used as a temporary or back up solution in cryonic circles. At the time only about 50 other people were in cryonic storage elsewhere. One of the largest cryonic facilities charge only a one time fee of $28,000 for cryonic suspension and storage, Of course my grand father is dead. As a matter of fact he spent several days in a cold morgue before he was even frozen. And he was stored for 3 months at -20 degrees celcius, 1 month at -78 degrees celcius, and 4 years at -196 degrees celcius before I brought him to Boulder Colorado, where he has since been at temperatures between -20 and -78 degrees celcius. Of course he can not just be thawed out, and then be brought back to life by minor surgery. but that we knew even before we froze him. Of the people presently in cryonic suspension, several have been frozen or stored under worse circumstances than my grand father. Even when cryonic suspensions are done under ideal circumstances, there is still a lot of frost damage, the bodies are dead, and there is no present way to revive them. But that is beside the point, because no one in their right mind is expecting that thawing, minor surgery and other presently available routines are all it will take to bring them back. Clearly something more is needed. It is far too simplistic to present cryonics as an attempt to revive people by freezing, thawing and making a few surgical adjustments to dead bodies, or to declare that the forming of ice crystals in the brain prevents restoration of memory. In order to work, cryonics is not dependent upon that we already know how to bring frozen dead bodies back to life, before we freeze them. The fact that ice crystals have formed in the brain, is not a proof that memory content can not be restored. The question is basically one of survival by degree, where one look at all possible means whereby the body and memory can be restored in full or in part. In worse case scenarios the challenge is one of recreating a person's DNA, cloning a younger genetically identical twin, and then programming the latter's brain with all information available about the original individual, reformatted so the new clone will experience the memory as though it had experienced it itself. One can already have cell samples taken, cultivated and frozen in such a way that they survive being frozen, and one can do a lot to preserve a copy of one's memory. Information can also be gleaned from other brains and other sources. The challenge is to clone adult cells and find a way to transfer memory electronically between brains, or to replicate how a brain has integrated itself. For all practical purposes and from the point of view of a clone that later wakes up with your memory, from its perspective: it is a continuation of you! In more ideal suspensions, the challenge is one of restoring circulation in selected tissues, healing these separately and then piecing them together again. The frozen brain can be seen as a three dimensional jig-saw puzzle, that has been broken into smaller parts that then have been scrambled. Though ice crystals have formed, we could foreseeably scan frozen brains for their present molecular structure, run all the gleaned information through an advanced computer system so to extrapolate the original structure, make some corrections based on other external memory sources, and use the ensuing information to electronically reprogram the brain after the latter has been cloned or thawed and otherwise restored. Individual tissues could foreseeably be replaced with transplants. Or damaged tissues could be healed by the implanting of identical cloned tissue, or by attaching the damaged tissues to healthy tissues, young healthy organisms or replicas of such. Nano technology is a completely different approach, that involves creating tiny machines from individual atoms. Machines that are so small that they can enter the cells through the blood stream. And then use these machines to rebuild the cells from the inside under the guidance of much larger external computers. The best one can do today is to sign up for cryonic suspension while alive, make all the necessary preparations up front, join or organize a local cryonic support group wherever one otherwise lives, and when the time comes, go to die in a hospital near one of the larger cryonic groups and be monitored 24 hours a day so that the doctor can sign the death certificate immediately upon one's death. The cryonic group would then be ready to maintain one's circulation, add anti coagulants to the blood, wash out the latter and replace it with a blood substitute that draws water out of the tissues and assists the cells in surviving the freezing. One would gradually be cooled down by way of ice, dry ice and nitrogen mists and then be transferred to longrun storage in liquid nitrogen. Anyone who are presently alive can also take many steps to have copies of their own DNA and memory content preserved separately, and even more steps to secure that their offspring are equipped with genes that enable the survival of freezing, and are cloned at the embryo stage, and that spare embryos and cultivated tissues are frozen so to assist in later rejuvenation and reanimation routines. I foresee a lot of steps that can be taken to restore physical bodies and memory contents even under the most adverse circumstances. Personally I would prefere to be frozen under ideal circumstances, but if that can't be done I would like to be frozen under as good conditions as possible even if these are extremely adverse. So let me present what I have actually been doing and the rationale behind it, in the hope that more people will see that it is highly rationale and quite valuable. MY RATIONALE ------------ Individual joyful life extension is a moral system, where personal life extension is the highest goal, and the most personally life extending actions constitute what is right. The goal is personal happiness furthermost into the future, of the highest kind and the most consistently in between. The objective is to be as healthy and happy as one can be for as long as possible. The main focus is on increasing the length of life that one is healthy and active. Since we are still faced with death, the question arise: how can we treat the dead so that they most likely can be revived sometime in the future? The Egyptians used mumification, and we have been embalming people for centuries. Today, cryonics is just the use of cold storage, to stop the molecular break down, so that dead bodies can be preserved for posterity, with as little accumulated damage as possible. The purpose of cryonics is not to immediately bring anyone back, but to stop the molecular break down, to stop the decay and to freeze dead bodies in time, while we search for ways to reverse the damage. And that is a purpose that we are fully capable of accomplishing today. We are not judging mumification as a failure because the mumies haven't been reviewed yet, but as a success because the mumies are still around several thousand years after they were first interned. Cryonics should be judged the same way. The goal is to be frozen and stored with the least possible damage while future generations search for still better ways to revive the dead. The goal is not to bring back people 100 percent identical to what they were before they died. The goal is to be able to restore people to a still larger extent. We are speaking about survival by degree, where the goal is to improve the degree to which a dead body can be restored to its peak mental and physical condition. I myself would like to be frozen under the most ideal circumstances, with the least accumulated damage to my body, and to be preserved until I could be brought back youthful and with all my memories, wills and faculties. Those who share my goal, are basically faced with the following challenges: pre mortem preparations, post mortem emergencies, retrival of bodies, freezing, storage, reanimation, and financing it all. To master these tasks, we start where we are, and then gradually improve upon what we can do. And that is what I have been doing. I have gone through the steps in a few cryonic suspensions so to see what obstacles are involved, and how these better can be overcome. I have signed up for cryonic suspension myself and I carry a life insurance policy to pay for it. I have worked on streamlining post mortem sign up routines, so that people can be frozen faster and with less damage. Having organized the first few cryonic suspensions from Northern Europe, and the second and fourth cryonic suspension from outside the United states, I have worked on improving retrieval of bodies, so that people who die far away from the cryonic facilities, easier can be frozen, and under still better conditions. I have given substantial thought to how to improve the cooling and freezing process, and even experimented with cooling and warming of my own body. I have worked on designing and building cryonic facilities that are safe, durable, and inexpensive to maintain and operate. I have looked into how to improve dry ice boxes, electrical freezers, and taller liquid nitrogen dewars as alternative ways of keeping people frozen. I have looked into how cooling can be maintained by local energy sources, with public utilities as the emergency back up, rather than the other way around. I am working on how we can better defend cryonic patients from attacks by government officials. And I have worked extensively on developing models and hypothesis for how we might be able to still better restore life from the dead. All these tasks and many other tasks too, have to be solved before we can successfully maintain anyone in longrun storage, let alone bring anyone back. No, I haven't frozen people under the most ideal circumstances, but I have frozen people who otherwise would not have been frozen, and I have made freezing available where this hadn't been available before. No, I can't take a frozen body and bring it back alive, but I like to think that I have taken a lot of steps that are bringing us closer to where we can do just that. MY GRAND FATHER'S CASE. ---------------------- I have been involved in cryonics since 1989, When my grand father died, and I had him frozen and flown to California for temporary storage at Trans Time's facility until I could get my own facility built. We bought the mountain property in the fall of 1991. Before we even bought land, I stood up at a town meeting and made my intentions clear: that I wanted to build a residence and a cryonic facility there. The zoning laws at the time did not mention cryonics, and clearly permitted smaller ventures to be run out of private homes. As a matter of fact many of the neighbors run their businesses out of their own homes, and my small cryonic venture clearly fell within the size and scope of activities that were not outlawed, and furthermore could not legally be outlawed because of the first amendment to the U.S. constitution. Almost every step I took, was promptly documented in the cryonic trade journals. The main building is of concrete, and a two story area had been set aside for installation of liquied nitrogen dewars. The metal shed and the dry ice box were only intended as a brief temporary 7 week solution. Brief dry ice storage is common in cryonic circles. If I had not been illegally ordered deported I would have completed the concrete storage vault and installed an electric freezer and a liquid Nitrogen dewar in the spring of 1994. One part of the problem is on of a reactionary protectionist tide sweeping the United States. Another part of the problem is one of town trustees trying to socialize private property by changing the zoning ordinances. And then jumping upon the opportunity to attack my cryonic venture when I got illegally deported. The town trustees have since backed down somewhat and offered me a contract whereby I can store my grand father at my mother's property under certain conditions. However the contract is not good enough. It is limited to my mother's life time, is not transferable to me or others, does not let me take on more clients, sets certain time limits for my completion of the house, time limits that the town and the immigration authorities can prevent me from meeting, and says that the town can thaw out my grand father if it deems that I have broken the contract, something I would never sign. My mother and I have a large investment in preparing the property for cryonic suspension, and would like eventually to be stored there ourselves. Dry ice is not cold enough to stop the molecular break down, and I am dependent upon taking on more clients so to afford to upgrade to liquid nitrogen and otherwise complete the facility. Basically the town trustees offered to stop harassing me legally if my mother and I would agree to sign away certain of our rights. I have turned down their offer and am instead mounting a petition drive in defense of cryonics, private property rights, and the universal unalienable rights of freedom of contract, travel and trade. I have prepared a few petitions, and about 50 articles in support of these, and will be using the Internet to organize politically.
